Administrative Leadership

Danielle Walz

Being from Minnesota, the love of the great outdoors instilled within me a sense of adventure and hard work. Throughout my years in Minnesota, I served as a captain for many sports, music groups, and church camps which helped me discover my passion for administrative leadership.

In 2016 I moved to North Carolina to attend Excel College where I completed the Core program with the C1 cohort. This opportunity provided me with holistic education where I learned practical life skills and character development preparing me for my career in administration.

My involvement post graduation has included serving the greater community by organizing events and activities, serving as a residential assistant for young women, and working in a medical office where I get to educate and serve as a health coach. In the future I hope to use my administrative and medical office skills to be a blessing to each community and small business I serve in by offering strong character, practical life skills, and a hard work ethic.

Excel College

Bachelor Degree in Religious Studies, Economy, and Critical Thinking

— Description of Excel College’s Degree Program —

By Economy (not Economics), we’re using one of the oldest and original meanings of the term derived from the Greek term oikonomia: stewardship, management of household affairs. Specifically, we are drawing from the theological concept of stewardship, leading to what the Greeks referred to as the Good Life — a virtuous life that fulfills our divinely created human nature. Using this definition of economy, our Bachelor degree has opened a pathway for students to integrate their faith into a customized emphasis.

Not confined to the classroom alone, our students are challenged and encouraged in 5 holistic pursuits (intellectual, spiritual, missional, practical, and professional) to become men and women who excel everywhere — in the classroom, home, church, work, community, and in their lives individually.

During the Practicum phase of Excel College, students continue to develop holistically, while concentrating on an emphasis that interests them personally. With the support and accountability of mentors and coaches, students design a customized learning experience that develops not only one-dimensional skills and experience according to set and relevant outcomes, but virtuous habits that lead them to become honest workers, family members, and citizens. In our model, we let the experts train our students on a basic skills level, while we equip them for a life of holistic flourishing.

Event Coordinator Position

In the fall of 2017 I served as the event coordinator for CreatEd Institute and apprenticed under President Lee Byberg and Jean Norment, Director of Student Life. This position allowed me to organize and facilitate weekend experiences for prospective students, an overseas art trip to Italy, various cultural and etiquette events, and graduation ceremonies. I learned skills of communication and leadership which provided me an opportunity to implement practical skills of organization and administration.

Through my experience working with Lee Byberg, I learned strategy, vision, and the power of networking. I got to travel with him to different events and see how he communicated with various crowds and put his networking skills to use. Before and after each event he taught me how to budget and allocate funds for both small and large scale events. These observed skills were incredible to see in action and have enhanced my personal and professional spheres.

Working with Jean Norment was a huge gift and an opportunity of a lifetime. I was able to learn the skill of hospitality and develop my personal communication strategy with parents and students to effectively and gracefully host families. She showed me how to make a space inviting, welcoming, and peaceful. I learned that the smallest details can make or break an atmosphere in a room. In addition to hosting students and families on campus, I also had the great opportunity to lead a group of students on an overseas trip to Italy. I handled all communications between students and staff as well as all of the activities and finances on the trip. With such a large group many hours went into creating itineraries, coordinating transportation, housing, and meals.

The greatest challenge I overcame while working as an event coordinator was problem solving through many obstacles. Each event was dynamic based on the group being hosted and activities planned so I had to learn the art of  “go with the flow” gracefully and under the radar. This was a valuable life skill to learn as it is common to have surprises pop up in many areas of life. The various scenarios each event provided me a practical space to grow in patience, humility, and teamwork.  In addition, other skills I have acquired include networking, hospitality, program development, communication,  and critical thinking.

I plan to use these skills in my personal and professional relationships and will allow me to serve each community or workplace I'm in more holistically and excellently.

Office Manager Experience

From January of 2018-2019 I served as a point person and manager of CreatEd Institutes internal teams office space. I worked alongside our Director of Lead Cultivation to ensure a cohesive and orderly work space for all staff and students.

Maintaining a clean and orderly work space for all employees and students required upkeep on all inventory in the classroom, office, and homes. If something needed a restock I placed all purchase orders and delivered items to its rightful home or space. This was a great experience to learn basic tracking and management skills in an office environment and keeping tabs on how each sphere of the organization ran.

In addition to inventory, I managed our master calendar and coordinated meetings/invites/reminders on the school schedule. Working closely with Lee Byberg, President of Excel College (formerly known as CreatEd Institute), allowed me to learn how to create and manage expense reports for the college in the event and hospitality category. We did bi weekly check-ins to make sure our budget and vision for all upcoming events was on track with original goals.

I was challenged with areas within the office that lacked a system. Overtime as the organization grew and team members moved in and out of our team, we had to come together each time in order to figure out our team's strengths and weaknesses. Working on a team helped me learn how to be a problem solver and system creator. It took many trials to find an effective system that worked for everyone and even more time to put these systems into practice but in the end we were left with a fully functioning and effective team.

I grew in my understanding of problem solving and working alongside many team members in order to create the best work space possible by setting goals. This was a key part of our success in creating new systems. This became one of the most rewarding parts of the job and what once was a mundane workspace became a productive and supportive space. It was clear that this clarity and vision moving forward allowed each team member to function effectively in their role. Once our team came together and agreed on our goals and action steps we functioned as a cohesive team moving forward with vision and clarity. There was a sense of honor and respect among the team and it became a much lighter work environment. Having the opportunity to be a point person for all of Excel colleges office and administrative functions in this way was a great experience for me to learn under professionals in education, business management, and leadership. I have learned the value of teamwork and communicating often to create a cohesive and light work environment. I plan to use these skills of teamwork and leadership in each workplace I serve in moving forward.

Residential Assistant and Discipleship Experience

I apprenticed with Excel College (formerly known as CreatEd Institute) under Bobby and Jean Norment. Bobby and Jean co-founded Excel College and function as the Directors of Student life. They spent many hours each week meeting with our team of residential assistants pouring wisdom, resources, and time into each of us in order to serve young men/women in their post high school graduate season.

Working as a residential assistant  provided me the opportunity over the course of 3 years to live and work with young women in a home environment. My time could be summarized as supporting them in their lives practically/vocationally, emotionally/relationally, and spiritually.

I worked on a team with other seasoned leaders to learn how to work and live alongside the students and be an example to them as someone who lives well in every area of life. I was required to attend weekly meetings with our staff and occasionally with the students' parents to maintain communication and accountability. Each week our team would discuss positives and negatives from the week and set goals or intentions for the week ahead. The purpose of these meetings were to work together to make sure student life on campus was flowing well and problem solve for any issues that would come up.

In addition to the weekly meetings, this role involved a lot of relational/emotional intelligence along with a practical side including inventory upkeep, facilitating cleaning schedules, communicating maintenance issues with campus crew, and handling any emergencies. This was one of the most rewarding yet challenging jobs I have had.

Each young woman had a different personality with their own set of strengths and weaknesses. We spent a lot of one on one time together getting to know each other and building friendship and working through difficult seasons. I was challenged by relational conflict among these young women as it became very common to have issues come up living in a home environment. provided an occasion for them to grow in conflict resolution, communication, and problem solving. It was my job to help them practice these skills with honor and grace.

Keeping the young women accountable to their commitments was a rewarding part of my job because it helped them be women of their word and follow through with what they said they would do. I saw this produce hard workers and honorable women in their work space, home life, and social life.

I plan to use my practiced relational skills from my experience with these young women to bless each community and workplace I serve in.

Olympic Start Elite Gymnastics Academy Coaching

During my time as a gymnastics coach, I had the opportunity to study under Miles Avery. Miles was an Olympic coach and former American Ninja Warrior Participant. He was a member of the men's coaching staff at four Olympic Games (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008) and served as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes men's gymnastics team from 1998-2010. After he was admitted into the Olympic Hall of fame in 2017, he took his skills and love of coaching and started his own gym in Asheville, North Carolina.

Under his leadership and expertise, I learned to coach co-ed ages 2-16 teach basic skills of coordination, strength, flexibility, and lesson planning.

Each week the girls and I set goals at the beginning of class and worked to and achieve them as a team.

The biggest challenge I faced while coaching was working with all different skill levels and abilities. As their coach I had the responsibility to work and help them improve their skills in a class setting without compromising class culture and improvement as a whole. This required me to problem solve and be adaptable to what was needed each class and communicate differently to each athlete.

A few of the girls I coached went on to compete for the state of North Carolina and pursue their dreams of becoming an Elite Gymnast.

I learned practical skills of communication, problem solving, and how to lead in a dynamic culture.

These skills will allow me to bring a positive outlook and patient attitude to an environment that requires many skill levels on a team.

Chiropractic Assistant and Medical Office Experience

I have served at Radius Chiropractic for almost 3 years now as a Chiropractic Assistant. This role has allowed me to grow my administrative skills in a medical office environment while serving the greater community of Asheville. Prior training for this position required a 6 month onboarding process that consisted of online training module videos, in person shadow experience, reading books and other online resources, and in person science training from local physicians and professionals. One of the ways we were able to test out our knowledge of Chiropractic and in office procedures was by memorizing all office scripts and protocols to prove we had the education and knowledge of every aspect of the job. In addition to all of the in office training, we as a team are required to travel 3 times a year to educational conferences to stay fresh on the latest scientific discoveries and procedures done in other offices.

My internship with Radius Chiropractic under Dr. Dan Martin has been an incredible experience to grow in my passion for administrative work. While there are many aspects to this job, I can summarize it into two categories of office admin and diagnostics. We work daily to make sure the Doctors schedule is correct and fluent, communicate with patients, and complete all necessary paperwork during an intake appointment and for ongoing care. In addition to the office work, each Chiropractic Assistant serves as a diagnostic technician for the Doctors which include performing diagnostic scans for each patient that comes in. All chiropractic assistants are proficient in taking X Rays, performing a Neuro-Thermal, Neuro-core, and Neuro Pulse scan with CLA, and a Stress Response Evaluation with Neuro Infiniti. We needed 10 hours of training in order to prove proficiency in each of these scans and still maintain an ongoing training schedule with the doctors to stay proficient and sharp in our abilities.

When a new patient arrives in our office we intake them which requires a thorough review of their paperwork/file, giving them a brief education when it comes to chiropractic/nervous system, and doing a consultation with them (gathering info on why they are there and how we can help). The consultation includes all of the neurological scans and interpretation of those scans. Based on those findings we will take the appropriate x-rays for each patient. Once we complete this full intake process we compile all of the information for the doctors for review and make the best recommendations for the patient. As a chiropractic assistant  I partner with the doctors to get the patient the best care that they need that is specific to their concerns and assessment. Once the patient has committed to care in our office we do periodic reassessments with them where we review their progress and run new neurological scans on them, as well as interpreting their growth/functional change over time.  This has been an incredible opportunity to learn skills of health coaching and accountability when meeting with each patient. Being a health coach in this way brings me a sense of joy to see individuals' health improve and heal overtime. One of my favorite aspects of the job is to be someone who can encourage each patient in their healing journey physically, mentally, and emotionally. It has been a challenge to walk alongside patients who are in pain and to what it seems are not improving as quickly as we would like.

Dr. Dan Martin and his wife/our office manager Danna take time each week to make sure our team and office culture are moving at an excellent pace. We have a weekly training schedule throughout the year reviewing our in office procedures, so specific science training, and team bonding exercises. Listed below are some of the science training topics we have studied and applied in our work.

Science training topics:

  1. X Ray rationale and analyzation
  2. Abnormalities of the spine- how to identify and treat
  3. The physiological process of stress in the body
  4. ADD, ADHD and Behavioral Issues in adults and kids
  5. Philosophy of the human body/medicine and its functions
  6. Adrenal Fatigue and Hormone Health
  7. Basic Anatomy and the Nervous System- master control center of the body
  8. The Human Lymphatic System
  9. HRV training (Heart Rate Variability) Checking for layers of stress in the nervous system
  10. Neuroplasticity
  11. Pregnancy/Postpartum Care
  12. Pediatrics and chiropractic
  13. Mental Health

This role has helped me grow in my overall understanding of health and how to care for my neighbor. The basic skills of account auditing, financial planning and management helped me personally grow in my own financial world. When it comes to leadership, I've had a wonderful opportunity to practice leading a variety of team training and team building exercises in order to maintain a positive team culture and work environment. I plan to use my new knowledge of health and administrative skills to serve each workplace, community, and organization I serve in.
