Excel College Journeyman Certificate

The Excel College Journeyman Certificate is for students who love learning and desire to pursue discipleship and character development as they become marketplace-ready.

About the Program

Students will pursue the Journeyman Certificate by pursuing the Excel College Bachelor’s degree track as a Certificate using our Active Assessment Method to demonstrate accomplishment and growth.

While the essence of our Journeyman Certificate closely aligns with the Bachelor’s degree program, it provides flexibility and depth for those who learn differently through active participation, attendance, and commitment. Participants will engage in meaningful Socratic discussions with degree-seeking students, collaborate with peers in the study hall, develop their character through discipleship in the home and on campus, and gain valuable hands-on experience in the marketplace through working a job in Phase 1 and pursuing an internship or apprenticeship practicum in Phase 2.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Students who are highly motivated to become wise, mature, and productive adults, but don’t have the same desire for credits or degrees that come with a normal Bachelor’s pathway.

WHAT DO I GET UPON COMPLETION?

Upon completing the program, students will graduate with a Journeyman Certificate in Classical Inquiry, Critical Thinking, and Integrated Economy with an emphasis in their marketplace practicum.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

The daily and weekly schedules, along with all program and community expectations, are identical, the only difference being that the Journeyman students will not be taking tests or receiving assignment grades to earn college credits, and graduates will:

- Graduate debt free
- Receive holistic education and discipleship
- Learn to thrive in the context of community
- Get hands-on experience in the field of their choice
- Earn their Journeyman Certificate through completing the 36-month program by maintaining the same attendance and participation standards in Core, Holistic, and Practicum courses as degree-seeking students
- Demonstrate an active pursuit of the Excel 4 Virtues (Honor, Humility, Hunger, and Health)

There is no cost difference between degree-seeking students and those pursuing the Journeyman Certificate.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The Active Assessment Method prioritizes meaningful engagement to replace standard academic exams. Students will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis, considering their consistent attendance and active, thoughtful participation in class discussions and activities, and commitment to growth.

The assessment will emphasize the following key areas:
Active Listening: Showing attentiveness to instructors and peers alike
Respectful Dialogue: Engaging with differing perspectives in a thoughtful and considerate manner, especially during moments of disagreement
Verbal Contribution: Sharing insights and responses that reflect understanding, curiosity, and a willingness to engage with course material and group conversations

Participation is evaluated through speaking and active listening and how students contribute to a respectful, reflective, and collaborative learning environment.

Program Overview

Learn to Serve, Build & Lead Communities

The ancient Hebrews used the term shalom to describe a concept of “wholeness” that centered around a sense of fullness, of completeness. But shalom is not just an individual description. No, shalom communicates an idea of universal flourishing, wholeness, and delight. In short, shalom is the experience of the way things ought to be. Shalom does start at the personal level, but it doesn’t end there. A person who flourishes can help a family experience shalom, and families who flourish can help a community experience shalom. And, in turn, that community in a state of shalom becomes an environment that fosters human flourishing.

In the Master’s Program for Religious Studies and Community Development, students will walk with Excel community leaders to become practitioners of (and partakers in) shalom. They’ll walk through their own personal journey of transformation while learning to steward the journeys of those after them - all while taking part in a rich community environment and discovering what it means to serve, build, and lead communities committed to fostering human flourishing.

Students will walk through a Master’s level version of the Excel Core Curriculum, which includes expanded readings and additional module(s), weekly mentorship from faculty and curriculum designers, and co-facilitating the Bachelor’s class. They’ll also serve and grow as leaders in various capacities within Excel College, Academy, or Institute (in functions such as teaching, mentoring, program administration and organizational stewardship) while participating in leadership development training with Excel Community leaders. In the end, students will be equipped to serve, build and lead these transformational communities committed to fostering human flourishing.

Who's It For?
